The village of Estoi located centrally lies to the north of Faro and at the foothills of the Serra do Caldeirao in the Algarve. It is best known for two items the attractive Estoi Palace which has been converted into a Pousada Hotel, and secondly the nearby Roman ruins of Milreu. Estoi was originally an agricultural settlement in the Roman period of the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. A luxury house with a large bathing complex was constructed in the 3rd century at Milreu and this eventually served as a sanctuary until the 6th century. The Palace of Estoi was constructed at the end of the 18th century by a local aristocrat. It was acquired in the 1893 to a wealthy landowner from the north that improved it with many architectural features and was rewarded with the title of Viscount of Estoi in 1906.
The village has an impressive church and has several fine homes of local agricultural merchants and the streets have mostly preserved their local character from the past.
