The locality of Aljezur has existed since before the arrival of the Romans. I was finally created as a hamlet by the Moors in the 10th century and they constructed the castle. The hamlet was conquered in 1249. The King Dom Dinis granted its right as village in 1580 and the castle fortifications were improved and in 1635 a small fort was built at Arrifana to defend the local beaches. Today it is a small market town with two parts divided by a fertile river valley and the hilltop Moorish Castle offers views overlooking the surrounding countryside. Several spectacular and almost unspoiled beaches are to be found in the vicinity. The beaches of Arrifana, Monte Clerigo and Amoreira are nearby whilst further afield is the Rogil beach.
The town of Aljezur is known for its Batata-doce Festival which is based on the sweet potato. There is also a small town museum in nearby Carrapateira devoted to archaeological history of the area.
